One of the most wonderful things about living in North Devon is that there is an abundance of wonderful independent cafes dotted about, in really pretty and unique locations.
We have listed down 7 of the best cafes in North Devon. We hope you enjoy the amazing coffee and sweet treats they offer.
Heartbreak Hotel Coffee, Braunton
Heartbreak Hotel Coffee serves barista-made coffee all day long using plastic-free cups, lids and straws!
They use local organic produce, serve delicious drinks and homemade bakes! Their doughnut could be the best doughnuts you can find in North Devon!
P.S. Just a note they serve fresh hand-made doughnuts only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday!
Johns, Instow
John’s is a local farmers-style supermarket, selling local Devonshire produce and they also have a fantastic little cafe and delicatessen that overlooks Instow Harbour.
The cafe offers a fab menu with great vegetarian options. We would *highly* recommend having a raspberry brownie when visiting, they are *divine!*.
Since you can’t eat anything from the deli in the cafe, you have to take it away with you. So, the deli is a great option to grab and go, to have a cute little picnic on the beach. The deli has a range of salads, meats, pastries, olives and vegetables - it’s absolutely amazing!
Coffee Cabin, Appledore
The Coffee Cabin is a cute and highly popular cafe on the quay front in Appledore. Again, it’s only small, but it has a cosy, intimate feel, and they serve a wide range of hot drinks and homemade cakes.
Celebrating local artists, The Coffee Cabin also decorates its walls with artwork, which you can buy.
The Cupcakery, Barnstaple
The Cupcakery is a small little cafe in Barnstaple, serving the most amazing range of homemade cupcakes in the cutest setting. They offer SO many fantastic and unique flavours: limoncello, Malteser, Ferraro Roche, Turkish delight - they are all *amazing*!
Storm in a Teacup – Watermouth Bay
Storm in a Teacup is a hidden gem! It’s a cafe set up in an old riverboat, with plenty of outdoor seating with fantastic views of the harbour.
It serves a good selection of classic lunches as well as homemade cakes which can be chosen from the fabulous display cabinet inside the boat. They also do a good selection of vegetarian and vegan options.
The Quay Café, Braunton
The Quay Café offers a spacious and relaxed atmosphere making it a perfect spot to hang out with your friends or to get your work done.
Apart from the relaxed atmosphere the café offers, it serves amazing organic coffee, great food with seasonal specialities, and delicious cream teas and cakes. They even have great ice cream, milkshakes, and smoothies to satisfy your sweet cravings!
They hold live music events every Friday throughout summer to promote the most exciting local acts North Devon has to offer! Check out their social media to see who will be playing this week! (Instagram: @thequaycafe, Facebook: Quay Cafe).
Tea on the Green – Westward Ho!
One of the most popular local cafes, with locals and tourists alike, is Tea on the Green in the seaside town of Westward Ho! The reason it’s so popular? It’s bloody * marvellous*.
Tea on the Green is done up in a quirky 1930’s style decor, full of nick nacks and art deco posters. It’s a sensory explosion, with so much to look at and admire. They offer an extensive lunch menu that comes in super hearty portions, and they have an interesting range of milkshakes and hot drinks which will leave you unsure on what do have! (The toasted marshmallow milkshake is SO good!).
The real treat though is their impressive cake selection. They have a display cabinet filled with intricate deserts - you will want to try it all! That’s why it would worth booking yourself in for an afternoon tea where you’ll get to sample a little bit of everything.
