Hi, I’m Helen! I run Jar with my sister Caroline and our lovely team Matt, Collette and Amala. Jar is an independent zero waste “refill” shop, you can bring your own reusable containers, buy just as much as you need by weight using our special dispensers, and have no packaging waste or food waste left over. Shopping with us is a great way to shop more sustainably, support local producers and help the environment. We are committed to operating ethically and sustainably, and always trying to improve what we do. We also offer deliveries for customers who aren’t able to come in to the shop.
What we sell:
- Loose food including organic pasta, rices, grains, beans & lentils, dried fruit, nuts, seeds, flours, herbs & spices, and raw and vegan chocolate
- Cleaning product refills with everything from washing up liquid and glass cleaner to hand soap and hand sanitizer
- Bathroom products including shampoo & conditioners, soaps and deodorants
- Locally made goods, homewares and gifts
We are sisters and were born in Plymouth, we have both moved around a bit for our careers and are now really excited to be back home in Plymouth and running Jar. We love the city and have always enjoyed the local coast and beaches, which gave us both an interest in the environment.
We first got into ‘zero waste’ living when we discovered the ‘Going Zero Waste’ blog (highly recommended!), and it was like a lightbulb moment, particularly thinking about how much of what we buy is thrown away within minutes or hours of use, which has such a negative impact on the environment. We started to think more about what we bought and how we shopped, and really wanted Plymouth to have a local zero waste shop. We made the leap and opened Jar last year.
We love how many fab locally made products we’ve been able to find, how many other indie business owners in Plymouth we’ve been lucky enough to meet and work with, and how amazingly lovely our customers are!
